Colour Dyeing

Description

It’s nowhere near as scary as it sounds. It’s only chemical or food dyes, set with hot water and…….vinegar!

This is a very simple way to achieve myriad and long lasting colours on animal fibres like wool, alpaca, cashmere, angora, silk, feathers, dog hair and also nylon (you don’t need the science – it just works). Also, because it’s an easily measurable system you can reproduce your dye recipes accurately and simply.

For the workshop we will use commercial synthetic dyes and Wilton’s food colouring. The yarn provided is 80% superwash merino/20% nylon.

Beginners Colour Dyeing ½ day

Morning Workshop 9:30 – 12:30

  • What you need and how to prepare
  • Mixing dyes into a 1% stock solution for ease and consistency
  • Wilton’s food colouring – splitting – use, embrace or avoid
  • Create dye recipes
  • Make a simple immersion dye bath for a solid and even dye
  • Experiment with dyeing sample skeins following colour wheel basics, mixing colours and variants on the stove top and in the microwave while you record the process
  • Hand painting – skein or top

You can then go wild personalising your own 100g skein or top to take home.

Ability level: No previous experience required.
